Top 10 Tuesday (35) — Characters I’d NEVER Want To Trade Places With

Standard

This is a weekly meme hosted by the good folks at The Broke and the Bookish. This week’s topic is…

Top Ten Characters I’d NEVER Want To Trade Places With

1. Katniss from The Hunger Games trilogy

Strike 1: Her government sucks and is controlled by a tyrannical maniac. Strike 2: Her dad died. Strike 3: She had to fight and kill other kids to survive and save her family.

What does she have on her side? Gale and Peeta. ‘Nuff said.

The Hunger Games (The Hunger Games, #1) Catching Fire (The Hunger Games, #2) Mockingjay (The Hunger Games, #3)

2. Alex from the Ashfall trilogy

Strike 1: Super-volcano destroying life as we know it. Strike 2: He meets crazed maniacs in the woods. Strike 3: He is journeying hundreds of miles to see if his family is alive…all the while thinking that they could very possibly be dead.

What does he have on his side? My only hope to survive would be that I find my own Darla who will save me with all of her amazing animal-skinning, machine-building, cross-country-treking skills!

Ashfall (Ashfall, #1) Ashen Winter (Ashfall, #2) Sunrise (Ashfall, #3)

3. Amy from the Across the Universe trilogy:

Strike 1: She is cryogenically frozen, and the experience (as described in the book) does NOT sound fun. Strike 2: She flies, frozen-sleeping, for hundreds of year rather than living her life with her friends. Strike 3: She’s “accidentally” woken up in space by crazed men.

What does she have on her side? It would be pretty interesting to see space FROM space and discover a new planet.

Across the Universe (Across the Universe, #1) A Million Suns (Across the Universe, #2) Shades of Earth (Across the Universe, #3)

4. Melinda from Speak

Strike 1: She had a traumatic experience. Strike 2: She didn’t/couldn’t tell anyone about the traumatic experience. Strike 3: Since she didn’t tell anyone, they shut her out for ruining a party.

What does she have on her side? Melinda had a great art teacher who worked to bring out her best.

Speak

5. Regina from Some Girls Are:

Strike 1: Regina starts out as a total B, and I would never want my personality to be like hers. Strike 2: Her so-called “friends” completely turn their backs on her and begin to bully her because of a rumor. Strike 3: I wish that some adult in her life had forced her to be straight with them or done some digging on what was up with her.

What does she have on her side? She can definitely dish it back to the mean girls as good as she gets it.

Some Girls Are

6. Ivan from The One and Only Ivan:

Strike 1: He was taken from his family when he was young, and doesn’t remember them. Strike 2: He loses his best, and really only, friend. Strike 3: He is trapped in a tiny cage that is too small, performing an act for very few visitors.

What does he have on his side? Hope. Ivan has hope that his art will make a difference for him and Ruby.

The One and Only Ivan

7. Mara from the Mara Dyer trilogy:

Strike 1: Her friends die (or do they?) in a tragic accident. Strike 2: No one believes her when she talks about the visions she sees. Strike 3: She has to deal with cuh-razy people.

What does she have on her side? Noah. Done.

The Unbecoming of Mara Dyer (Mara Dyer, #1) The Evolution of Mara Dyer (Mara Dyer, #2) The Retribution of Mara Dyer (Mara Dyer, #3)

8. Eli from The Compound series:

Strike 1: He is living in an underground bunker because the world above is (supposedly) destroyed. Strike 2: He discovers what is in the room behind the secret door. Strike 3: His dad is completely nutso.

What does he have on his side? This is the only story where I can’t really think of anything that Eli has going for him!

The Compound (The Compound, #1)

9. Bitterblue from the Graceling Realm series:

Strike 1: Her dad is a freaking Graced psychopath. Strike 2: Her mother is murdered right in front of her. Strike 3: She inherits a kingdom full of brainwashed people.

What does he have on his side? It would be nice to have a team like Katsa and Po around to fight for and rescue me whenever I needed it!

Graceling (Graceling Realm, #1) Fire (Graceling Realm, #2) Bitterblue (Graceling Realm, #3)

10. Todd from the Chaos Walking trilogy:

Strike 1: He doesn’t have a lot of female interaction since there aren’t anymore women in in Prentisstown. Strike 2: He is chased by craaaaaazy men, including Aaron. Strike 3: The events that surround Manchee at the end (if you’ve read it, you know what I’m talking about.)

What does he have on his side? He has Ben and Cillian who care very deeply for him, and he finds Viola who journeys with him.

The Knife of Never Letting Go (Chaos Walking, #1) The Ask and the Answer (Chaos Walking, #2) Monsters of Men (Chaos Walking, #3)

Top 10 Tuesday (34) — 2014 Debuts

Top Ten 2014 Debuts I’m Excited For

Texas Authors

The Murder Complex (The Murder Complex, #1)  Side Effects May Vary  The Truth About Alice  Wish You Were Italian

As a Texas girl, I cannot wait to read these debuts by Texas authors! I have met Julie, Jennifer, and Kristin, and they were all so nice. I actually have ARCs of Side Effects May Vary and The Truth About Alice that I begged for at NCTE, but my students have them and are reading them. I’m still so sad that I didn’t get The Murder Complex while I was there! You definitely want to add these titles to your debut author TBR.

Mysteries

Dear Killer  No One Else Can Have You  Nearly Gone  Pointe

I’m not a big mystery reader, but I’m trying to fill that reading gap. All of these stories sound absolutely amazing! I used to be a ballerina, so Pointe sounds interesting to me from that perspective. I was lucky enough to get ARCs of Dear Killer and No One Else Can Have you at NCTE, and both are VERY popular with my students so far!

Contemporaries

Open Road Summer  The Break-Up Artist  Summer on the Short Bus  Something Real  The Promise of Amazing

The summary of Summer on the Short Bus sounds like it could pair nicely with 52 Reasons To Hate My Father. It’ll be interesting to see how the Wren in The Promise of Amazing has a different journey than Wren in The Infinite Moment of Us. For some reason, I’ve been drawn to contemporaries more than other genres lately, and I can’t wait to read some of these contemporaries from debut authors.

Top 10 Tuesday (33) — Bookish Goals

Bookish Goals for 2014

  1. Finish Amulet graphic novel series. I know I said this last year, and it didn’t happen…but THIS year it will! I know that it will have to be during the summer because my students constantly have these books checked out from my classroom.
  2. Keep up with It’s Monday! What Are You Reading posts EVERY week. I usually get at least this post done, but I’ve been neglecting my blog even on that aspect lately. No more! Which leads nicely into my next goal…
  3. Post at least one review per week. At least 2 during the summer.
  4. Post a “Books Around the Room” post each week with snippets from students. I use this hashtag sometimes on Twitter, and it’s always fun to see what other students are reading in other classrooms. I think it would be fun to use snippets from conferences and reader responses to elaborate a little on what my students are reading.
  5. Read with my kids as much as possible. My Goodreads goal this year is 214 books because I’m going to count the picture books that I read with my children. In the past, I have only counted the novels that I’ve read, but I really need to work on making it more of a habit to record what my kids and I read together.
  6. Finish the Contagion level of the Dystopia 2014 challenge. I’ve “finished” this challenge in the past because I’ve read the correct number of books, but I didn’t FINISH because I didn’t complete any reviews afterward :-\
  7. Read one non-fiction picture book each month for the Non-fiction Picture Book Challenge. My poor NFPB Goodreads shelf only has about 7 books, so I’ll be looking through Alyson’s older reviews to find some good ones!
  8. Finish the Gallagher girl series. I’ve read the first two books, so I just need the last 4!
  9. Do better at pulling mentor sentences/paragraphs from each book I read. I always see them and love them…but I don’t write them down or add them on Goodreads, which I need to do.
  10. Listen to 1 audiobook each month, thanks to my Audible Christmas present! I used this month’s credit on The Hero’s Guide to Saving Your Kingdom which I will start as soon as I’m done with Across the Universe.

Top 10 Books I’ve Read So Far In 2013

It’s no secret that I can never keep a T10T post to only 10 books, so I split my choices between two lists: what I’ve read so far in 2013 that was published in 2013, and what I’ve read so far in 2013 that was published before 2013!

Clicking the book cover will take you to Goodreads where you can add the book to your TBR list.

Published During 2013

Arclight (Arclight, #1)  Pivot Point (Pivot Point, #1)  When You Were Here  The 5th Wave (The Fifth Wave, #1)  Scarlet (Lunar Chronicles, #2)
