It’s Monday! What are you Reading? is a meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journeys where you can recap what you’ve read this week while planning ahead on what to read next! Jen at Teach Mentor Texts and Kellee & Ricki at Unleashing Readers added their own twist by focusing on kidlit, from picture books up to YA.

Last week I read:

MG/YA Books

Reality Boy  Ignite Me (Shatter Me, #3)  Now Is the Time for Running  The Shadow Throne (The Ascendance Trilogy, #3)

Far From You  The Impossible Knife of Memory  Noggin

Reality Boy: To me, A.S. King can really do no wrong. My heart broke for Gerald, and I couldn’t believe how Tasha got away with everything. As someone who watched episodes of SuperNanny, it was interesting to see what happens behind the cameras.

Ignite Me: Interesting end to an interesting series. Most of the book was spent getting to know the “true” Warner and watching Juliette try to swim through what she thought she knew about him in order to decide how she feels about him.

Now is the Time for Running: Such a heart-wrenching story. I book-talked this book to my students, and they were lining up to read it when I was done. This book brings up so many issues that my students know nothing about.

The Shadow Throne: I gave this 3 stars on Goodreads. I really loved the plot–it was typical Jaron/Sage cunning–but I felt that SO. MUCH. of the book was Jaron telling us what was happening rather than actual action SHOWING what was happening. However, it was a great ending to a series that I truly enjoyed.

Far From You: I have to give props to this book for tackling some very tough issues. However, the book never really came together all the way for me. The story is told in before/after chapters (before Mina’s murder and after), with the before chapters giving us the backstory of Mina and Sophie. But there’s really no cohesion between the backstory of the girls and their “secret” and the reason that Mina is murdered. I know there didn’t need to be, but I felt like there should have been since the “secret” was made into a huge deal.

The Impossible Knife of Memory: Another win for LHA. This book tackles the tough issue of a teen dealing with her father’s PTSD. I felt so sorry for Hayley and all that she has had to deal with, and it made me even more appreciative of all of the men, women, and children whose lives are disrupted in order to protect freedoms that we often take for granted. The one thing I didn’t understand was why Finn liked Hayley so much since she had such a surly attitude. (She was quite a B a lot of the time.) But I still loved it.

Noggin: What the what?! The premise of this book is absolutely amazing. I cannot even imagine if my head was attached to a different body, and I was frozen while all of my friends/family were growing up without me. This story truly makes you put yourself in Travis’s shoes and imagine what it would be like to be in his place.

Audiobook

Curtsies & Conspiracies (Finishing School, #2)

Win. Win. Win. I love this series, and I LOVVVVVE Moira Quirk’s voice as she narrates this series! If you like girl-power and steampunk, get this.

This week I’ll continue reading:

MG/YA Books

Birthmarked (Birthmarked #1)

Just starting this on Sunday night! When I met Caragh O’Brien last year, she was one of the SWEETEST people ever, and I can’t wait to read her series.

Audiobook

Far Far Away

I literally have like 50 minutes left of this audiobook, and I’m RIGHT at “the good part” of the ending! I really just wanted to sit in my car and finish when I got back from the store today!

Other possible reads this week:

Sweethearts  This is What Happy Looks Like  All Our Yesterdays (All Our Yesterdays #1)  Otherbound

I’m on Spring Break this week, but my focus is going to be on cleaning and organizing my house rather than reading. But of COURSE I will still find time to read a bit 🙂 These are some of the books I have available.

Last week I read:

MG/YA Books

Cress (Lunar Chronicles, #3)  Unravel Me (Shatter Me, #2)

Cress: Love, love, love. This is one of my absolute favorite series, and I can’t wait for Winter because I’m sure the ending is going to be EPIC. The ONLY thing I didn’t like in Cress is that one character was captured and separated from the group, and it was heart-breaking.

Unravel Me: After reading this the second time (to refresh my memory for Ignite Me), I stick by my 3 star rating. The metaphoric run-on sentences became TOO. MUCH. for me after a while. I know Juliette is fractured and fragile, but I wanted her to snap to it a lot quicker. And the shift in the relationship with Warner gives me the heebie-jeebies after his monstrosity in Shatter Me.

This week I’ll continue reading:

MG/YA Books

Reality Boy  Ignite Me (Shatter Me, #3)

I had to put Reality Boy on pause to devour Cress, then it was at home when I needed something to read at school during the week! Still working on it. And I’m  quickly reading Ignite Me to see what happens with Juliette, Adam, and Warner.

Audiobook

Curtsies & Conspiracies (Finishing School, #2)

I’m so sad that I’m not able to listen to this MORE! I’ll have 4 hours in the car on Friday and Sunday, so I’ll get through a big chunk then.

Other possible reads this week:

Don't Look Back  Now Is the Time for Running  How I Live Now  Twenty Boy Summer

I’m not very good at sticking to plans of what I will read, but these are some books that will be in the mix!

Last week I read:

MG/YA Books

Seraphina (Seraphina, #1)  Into the Still Blue (Under the Never Sky, #3)

Seraphina: This was a great fantasy read that completely deserved all the praise and awards it received. I loved the character of Seraphina, and I loved the world Rachel Hartman created. I can’t wait to continue the series.

Into the Still Blue: A great ending for a great trilogy. It wasn’t as emotional as the endings to other trilogies lately — I’m looking at you Allegiant! It was quite satisfying, but also a little flat, if that makes any sense at all. I still love Roar!

Audiobooks

The Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom

The Hero’s Guide to Saving Your Kingdom: This was such a great retelling of fairy tales that we all love. My son was in and out of the car when I was listening, so he missed pieces of the story, and he asked if he could listen to it on his own…that’s a definite win! The narrator has AMAZING voices for the characters, and we will definitely be listening to book 2 as well!

This week I’ll continue reading:

MG/YA Books

Reality Boy

I managed to get started on this on Sunday, but I didn’t get far because of the Super Bowl (way to go Seahawks!).

Audiobook

Curtsies & Conspiracies (Finishing School, #2)

I absolutely loved Etiquette & Espionage on audiobook last summer, and this audiobook is living up to my expectations! Moira Quirk does an amazing job with accents and voices as the narrator of this book!

Other possible reads this week:

Don't Look Back  Now Is the Time for Running  How I Live Now  Twenty Boy Summer

The last week I read:

MG/YA Books

Dangerous  Chain Reaction (Perfect Chemistry, #3)

Dangerous was an ok read for me. It’s one of those where you end up on the fence because it’s ALL. OVER. the place…but still an entertaining story. There were so many pieces that were just completely unbelievable, but overall I still enjoyed the story.

Chain Reaction was a good ending for the Fuentes brothers. I felt that Luis’ story wasn’t very unique; to me, it basically felt like a retelling of Alex’s story. But I can definitely see why my students love this series. One request: could we get a redo of all of the covers so more of my boys will read them?! kthnx

I’ll continue reading:

MG/YA Books

  Seraphina (Seraphina, #1)
Started on Sunday

Audiobook

The Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom
Not driving my long drive every other weekend, so it’s been slow going.

Other possible reads this week:

Into the Still Blue (Under the Never Sky, #3)  Reality Boy  Don't Look Back

So I was total idiot last week because  Into the Still Blue doesn’t come out until THIS Tuesday! So I’m headed to pick it up tomorrow 🙂 I’ve heard great things about Reality Boy…and really, can A.S. King do any wrong? Don’t Look Back is an ARC I picked up at NCTE that looks so interesting. Also, the cover is beautiful!

The last week I read:

MG/YA Books

Tiger Lily  Rules of Attraction (Perfect Chemistry, #2)  The Truth About Alice

Tiger Lily: A haunting re-telling of the Peter Pan tale, focusing on Tiger Lily and told from Tinker Bell’s point of view. While I didn’t love it like some people did, I definitely enjoyed it. It was really interesting to see a different take on the fairy tale, and the ending brought some tears. This also counts as my “Around the World” motif challenge read.

Rules of Attraction: The second story in the Fuentes brothers’ trilogy is about the middle brother Carlos who has moved to Colorado to live with Alex after some trouble in Mexico. My students absolutely love this series, and I am loving it as well. I think that Simone Elkeles does a great job of writing an authentic story.

The Truth About Alice: A short, but powerful, book that showcases the power of rumors. I loved that the book was told from multiple POVs, and I really wanted to slap some of the characters for being so stupid.

I’ve been saving a Christmas gift card so that I can buy Into the Still Blue on Tuesday! I can’t wait to see how that series ends. After reading Rules of Attraction this week, I’m ready to see how the littlest Fuentes brother ends up, as well. Seraphina has been on my TBR for a while, and I’m hoping to get to that this week.

The last week I read:

MG/YA Books

Fault Line  Openly Straight

Fault Line: A heart-wrenching view of rape from the point of view of the boyfriend of the girl who was raped. This book will spark some series discussions among people who read it. I’m eager to read more of Christa Desir’s writing.

Openly Straight: Everyone has a label that defines them, and Rafe felt like the label of being “gay” defined him above all else. This was such a great story about identity and self-awareness.

Audiobook

Across the Universe (Across the Universe #1)

Across the Universe: I enjoyed the story, but I did not care for the audio. The narrators were not very good with varying voices, and it annoyed me the whole time that Amy’s voice was kinda harsh, but when Elder’s narrator was reading his chapter and had to speak for her, he did this stereotypical high girly voice. If I continue this series, I will read rather than listen.

This week I plan to read/continue:

MG/YA Books

Tiger Lily  Perfect Lies (Mind Games, #2)  Rules of Attraction (Perfect Chemistry, #2)

Audiobook

The Hero's Guide to Saving Your Kingdom

The Hero’s Guide to Saving Your Kingdom: Started this last week, and I’m loving it so far! The character’s voices are awesome.
