It’s Monday! What Are You Reading? (49)

Standard

IM  Mon Reading Button PB to YA

It’s Monday! What are you Reading? is a meme hosted by Sheila at Book Journeys where you can recap what you’ve read this week while planning ahead on what to read next! Jen at Teach Mentor Texts and Kellee & Ricki at Unleashing Readers added their own twist by focusing on kidlit, from picture books up to YA.

Clicking the covers will take you to the Goodreads page, where you can add it to your “To Read” list!

The last week I read:

MG/YA Books

When We Wuz Famous  Supernaturally (Paranormalcy, #2)

When We Wuz Famous is a great urban fiction read. I think a lot of my students who have read this book liked it so much because they could relate. Francisco, the main character, is trying to expand his horizons beyond Spanish Harlem, and he feels pressure on so many sides. His family and girl-friend want him to do well, so he feels pressure there. His best friend doesn’t want to Fran to change or abandon him (like everyone else in Vincent’s life), so he feels pressure to look out for V “no matter what.” How are you expected to better yourself when people then throw, “Oh, now you think you’re better than me?”  your face?

I did love how the book used an omniscient narrator and jumped from character to character so that we received a rounded view of the story unfolding.

Supernaturally is a cute second book in the Paranormalcy series. Evie is such a funny narrator…I would want to be her friend in real life!

This week I plan to read/continue:

MG/YA Books

The Darkest Minds (The Darkest Minds, #1)  Horde (Razorland, #3)  Champion (Legend, #3)

I started The Darkest Minds last week, but wasn’t able to read much at home since I was busy reading/grading 100 final stories before report cards! But so far, I am loving it!

If you follow me on Twitter, you’ve probably seen my disgruntled tweets about how I pre-ordered Horde in MARCH and have YET TO RECEIVE MY COPY!! The estimated delivery date is November 4, so we’ll see if it’s here this evening!

After reading Allegiant, I am terrified of how Champion will end!

Educational

Texts and Lessons for Content-Area Reading: With More Than 75 Articles from the New York Times, Rolling Stone, the Washington Post, Car and Driver, Chicago Tribune, and Many Others

This is such a great resource as I plan my expository unit! I can’t wait to get Texts and Lessons for Teaching Literature.

Audiobook

The Diviners

Super spooky so far! I have a few girls who are into spooky/scary stories this year, but I think the length of this book would scare them off :-\

I can’t wait for this week of reading! What about you?
