If you follow me on twitter (wait, you don’t? Why not?!), you know I’ve had a hellacious experience teaching summer school this summer. I finished Going Vintage on June 6, during the last week of school, and I have literally finished TWO other books since then. So sad! Thankfully, this is the last week of summer school, so I can get some good reading in during July!
Five Summers was a touching read about summer camp friends who are reunited after years apart. I loved how the story was told through a mesh of different POVs and flashbacks to the girls and their experiences throughout their summers. I went to summer camp for a week during one summer, and this book made me wish that I had gone to camp and had summer friends. It also made me think about my high school best friends, and how we’ve grown apart as our lives have led us in different directions. Definitely relatable!
I absolutely lovvvved Going Vintage! The main character, Mallory, had a great voice, the idea was fabulous, and I loved that she grew in her independence as the story moved along. She thinks that her grandmother had it so easy back when life was “simpler,” but she definitely learns a “grass isn’t always greener” type lesson through her experiment.

Five Summers sounds great! I grew up with a summer camp being very important to my family and my experiences there are unforgettable. I am actually working on a story idea around this topic which I started in November for NaNoWriMo and will work on this summer. I think a trip to the library is in order! I’ve heard good things about Going Vintage also. It looks like you have a lot of fantasy reading planned for this week. Hope the last week of summer school goes fast and you get to start enjoying your summer!

Five Summers sounds so sweet! It sounds like an older companion to Like Bug Juice on a Burger.

All of your choices look fantastic! My son and I’ve read Insignia, and it is a great sci-fi novel. I hope you get the chance to finish it!
Yay! So glad you liked Going Vintage . . . as I mentioned on my post, I am trying to wade into more YA and thought it was so great. And a “cleaner” title to recommend to younger teens that I know. Great talking points in it, too! Sorry summer to date has been so tough, but hopefully you’re rounding the bend into the summer you really want, very soon!
Going Vintage is being talked about & you like it too-must put it on some list! I didn’t go to a regular camp, just a few various ones through the years, but had students who went to this same camp year after year, adding more weeks as they got older. They talked about it with such affection. Hope the reading time will improve!
I would say this book is geared more toward high schoolers (there’s a some underage drinking and talk of hooking up), but this is probably a story that they would be able to relate to at some point!
